Maintaining Wrought Iron Railings in a Tropical Climate
Humidity and rain are hard on ironwork. Here is the simple maintenance routine that keeps wrought iron railings looking new for decades.
Wrought iron is durable, but Philippine humidity, monsoon rain and salt-laden air will find any break in its coating.
Start with the finish. A hot-dip galvanised or zinc-primed base coat under powder coating is dramatically more resilient than paint applied straight onto bare steel. On exterior gates and fences we always specify a primer plus powder coat system.
Every three months, wash the railing with mild soap and water and dry it. This removes the salt and grime that hold moisture against the coating.
Every six months, inspect welds, base plates, and the underside of horizontal members — rust starts where water pools and where nobody looks. Any bubbling or orange bloom should be sanded back to clean metal, primed, and touched up immediately.
Every few years, plan a full recoat for exterior work. Done on schedule, a well-fabricated wrought iron railing easily outlasts the mortgage.
